Finnertys Mills

Finnertys Mills

West Ireland | County Galway

Finnerty's Mills are located in Leitrim, 10 km southeast from Loughrea, in County Galway. This working, water-powered Corn Mill is a wonderful example of industrial heritage dating from early 19th century, and it remains in the hands of the Finnerty's family through all this time. This mill was mainly used to grind corn and various grain but in its heyday there was also Woolen Mill. Finnerty's Mill has been carefully reconstructed under the guidance of Industrial Archaeologist, Dr. Fred Hammond and Conservation Architect, Ger McManus and it is now open for touring. Guided tour with the mill owner gives a lot of interesting informations but most of all, it demonstrates and explains the work of a water driven mill. There is also small museum which has many interesting artefacts collected by Finnertys over the centuries and among other things, a sword found in the mill during the restoration.
